Need help with transmission

I could really use some help from you guys who know about these cars.. I don't actually own the car - I came to England on work and there's a Civic that needs some work so I can drive it. As I don't know much about these cars, or this car's history I'll give you as much as I know.. tell me if you need more details.

I think it's a 90 GL? 2 door hatchback with a 1.4 SOHC? It's got dual carbs and the numbers next the engine say D14A1. Anway, the problem isn't the motor, it's the tranny. It has a 4 speed auto in it. Seems like when it gets ready to change gears, it's like I step on the clutch.. the engine revs and the drive stops.. then it grabs the next gear.. seems like it's sorta slipping all over the place too.. doesn't really seem to take off properly.

So what do you think? I don't know any transmission shops here, and they would be plenty expensive anyway.. I am wondering how hard it would be to change the tranny? Where would I get a decent auto from? I could ship one in from the states I guess.. I also thought it might be easy to change to a manual maybe? Has anyone done this, and what's involved? These seem like great little cars, with most of the engines and parts interchangeable (I LOVE that).. I'd really like to change to a manual if it's possible/cheap/fairly easy.

Check the transmission fluid level. You may need to add fluid. If you need to add fluid than i hear that your only suspose to add Honda fluid to the tranmission.

dude, check the tranny fluid. that's really what it sounds like. use 10w30..i put synthetic in mine but you don't have to. the filler is the 17 mm plug next to the right axle.

Ok, the transmission swap is not hard. My neighbor and I changed his trans on his 91 Si in the better part of a Saturday. It was two of us and it wasn't hard. It was just time consuming. You could probably source a trans for your particular model over there in the UK at a salvage yard or a try to find someone selling one. HTH

but you didn't try to swap an auto tranny...it's a lil more involved. although, the biggest hassle is just getting it out...anyway, it sounds to me like the fluid needs to be changed/flushed/topped off. i'd try that first. could do wonders for the car. good luck.

I guess I should have read the whole post....lol Yea, I wouldn't really want to try the auto to manual swap without someone who has done one helping me out.

Any tips on how to make sure i get all the old stuff out? OK, so is that the drain plug next to the axle?
Will let you know how it goes - will give it a shot tomorrow. How much should it take? And how should i measure when it's full? most other cars I've done you just check it straight after turning it off..
